Easy Home Decor

Does a room in your home lack life, energy or interest? Here are a few tips to give it some oomph without spending a dime!

Look at your room closely, is everything in your room square? Examples; your sofa, coffee table, television & stand, bed & bedside tables. If they are, consider adding some interesting accessories that are circular in shape to create some contrast. Some ideas I could suggest are lamps, plants, vases or sculptural art to add softness into an otherwise hard lined room.

When you acessorize the room, set things at different eye levels. Example; two different sized lamps or a grouping of different sized items on a mantle or side table. Grouping a plant with a grouping of accessories adds texture and a pop of color as well.

Do you have a lot of fabric in this room? When I say fabric, I mean curtains, furniture, bedding, table skirts. Or do you have a lot of wood surfaces? Examples; end tables, bedside tables, coffee tables, dressers. Bring some added interest to the room by adding glass, metal, baskets, rugs or plants. If your room has a lot of dark colors, add items that bring a pop of lighter colors. If you have a lot of wood furniture, bringing in glass vases, metal tchotchkes (pronounced: choch-keys) to add interest.

Lastly, consider hanging art in your room, connecting it to your other furnshings by hanging it 6 to 9 inches above furniture lines. This keeps your eye visually stimulated and your brain sees the entire room vs stopping at one point or another.

Always remember in decorating, not all furniture has to match. You can add interest to a bedroom by having two different night stands, a different arm chair than your couch in a livingroom or different dining chairs in a dining room. You can connect these different looks in any situation with color, stain or fabric. Just because the lines aren't the same, doesn't mean it won't compliment each other.

These are just a few tips to hopefully bring a fresh face to your existing room and best of all...cost free!
